![]() ![]() ![]() This inline 4-cylinder engine had a durable foundation of a cast-iron block with a cast-aluminum head. In 1997 the 1.9L diesel was introduced as the first generation TDI engine. The TDI engines were constructed with many similar features that were found in diesel engines in heavy-duty applications for enhanced durability. The addition of a diesel engine provided superior fuel economy and overall better performance over the gasoline options. These new engines received the TDI (Turbocharged Direct Injection) designation and were offered in the Jetta, Golf, Passat, and Beetle. Between 1997-2015 Volkswagen introduced a series of turbocharged 4-cylinder diesel engines into their lineup of passenger cars available in the USA.
